Creative Climate Leaders

Overview:

This programme is suitable for art, design and drama classes. It can also be adapted for an after school or extra curricular project for a group of students that have a keen interest in climate action and/or creative communication.

Students will be taught a broad introduction to the climate crisis and have expert guidance from a Hive tutor to help them learn more about a particular topic of interest. They will be provided a brief for a collaborative, group project to respond to through their chosen creative medium. No Powerpoint presentations allowed!

Careers in sustainability that match their current studies and interests will be highlighted throughout and students will be signposted to other relevant opportunities.

Course content and structure:

Session 1: half a day in-person at the school/collage

  • Introduction to the climate crisis including climate justice and eco-anxiety
  • Explanation of the project brief: choosing a specific issue raised in the introduction to research and communicate about to peers or teacher/tutor audience
  • Critiquing a range climate and sustainability art and design works
  • Discussion to help form groups based on their interests and to start developing ideas

Between sessions:

  • Teacher to work with the students to develop the content

Session 2: 1.5 – 2 hours in-person at the school/collage

  • Exercises to develop devising, designing and communication skills – tailored to chosen creative medium.
    • Students share ideas for feedback from each other
  • Exercise ideas to help explore different perspectives on the subject

Between sessions:

  • Continued support from a teacher
  • Optional booking of online advice and critique of project in development

Final presentation:

  • Format to be discussed with the school/ college
  • If other schools/colleges are running the programme simultaneously there is the option of a joint event

Who is it for:

It is most suited to sixth form students but can be run with Years 9+. It is suitable for Year 11 students but not in Summer term.
